2024 Volkswagen Golf R, about 11,000 miles. I like a privately listed car, but the seller still owes money and does not have a clear paper title in hand. What is the safest way to handle payoff, lien release, payment and possession?

Don't get cute with the meetup or the payment. If the 2024 Volkswagen Golf R still shows a lien, coordinate payoff with the lender before any cash changes hands. Then you'll know the next fork. Did the worksheet show tax yet? If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

Yes, with one caveat: A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2024 Volkswagen Golf R is enough reason to walk. Then you'll know the next fork. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

Not convinced that's the whole story. Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 2024 Volkswagen Golf R, not a parking lot at night. I'd do that before spending real money. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Not letting add-ons ride along because everyone does.

I'd treat this like cash with a paper trail. A rushed deposit before you can inspect the 2024 Volkswagen Golf R is enough reason to walk. Then you'll know the next fork. On “private seller still has a loan on,” that was the fork that mattered for me. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.
