Anyone else: A/C is cold while driving, warm at stoplights

ColdStartNerd7Community StarterSep 1, 20262022 Volkswagen GTI SENew Jersey
2022 Volkswagen GTI SE, about 37,000 miles. A/C gets properly cold on the highway but becomes noticeably warmer at long lights. It cools down again almost immediately once the car is moving. Could this still be a refrigerant issue or does that point more toward airflow/fans? I'm in New Jersey. Trying to diagnose before I book a shop.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Move a coil or plug on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI didn't change. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2022 Volkswagen GTI in New Jersey with 37,000 miles. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI first. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2022 Volkswagen GTI in New Jersey with 37,000 miles. Stop there until you know. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Quick add on that: If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Capture voltage while the 2022 Volkswagen GTI is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Move a coil or plug on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Only after sitting overnight so far.

Log the conditions before you spend. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2022 Volkswagen GTI does it — then decide on parts. Save the big job until that test fails. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2022 Volkswagen GTI, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Save the big job until that test fails. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Capture voltage while the 2022 Volkswagen GTI is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2022 Volkswagen GTI in New Jersey with 37,000 miles. Do that first. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. Checking again after work.

OP here — recorded a short video and noted speed, temp, and whether it was in gear. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Two 2022 Volkswagen GTIs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.
