CPO luxury SUV or brand-new mainstream SUV?

WrenchGarageCommunity StarterMar 29, 20262025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid LimitedRaleigh
Budget works for either a lightly used luxury SUV or a new mainstream model with a full warranty. I'm more worried about three-to-five-year ownership cost and service downtime than the purchase price. How would you compare them? I'm in Raleigh. Trying to diagnose before I book a shop.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2025 Hyundai Tucson price probably got worse. That's the part that actually changes the decision. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. If they balk, that's your answer. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

The trap is a pretty payment hiding a worse car price. If one piece looks too good on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. That's the part that actually changes the decision. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

Yes, with one caveat: Ask for out-the-door on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. If they balk, that's your answer. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I would not stare at the monthly. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2025 Hyundai Tucson price probably got worse. Then the comparison gets honest. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2025 Hyundai Tucson numbers without them. Do that before you talk monthly again. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want a dollar figure or a measured spec, not 'should be fine.' If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

OP here. Still looking, but I'm waiting on inspection notes before I send money on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

If I were shopping this, if one piece looks too good on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. This is from a 2025 Hyundai Tucson in Raleigh. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Not letting add-ons ride along because everyone does.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. GAP, paint, and nitrogen are optional until you run the 2025 Hyundai Tucson numbers without them. Do that before you talk monthly again. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Compare apples to apples or you'll get spun. Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2025 Hyundai Tucson so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.
