Question: Car hesitates once, then drives normally

BatteryWrenchCommunity StarterNov 16, 20252021 BMW X5 xDrive40iNationwide
Every few days I get a brief hesitation pulling away from a stop. It feels like the engine cuts power for half a second and then everything is normal. No stored light on the dash. Wondering what live data would be worth logging. I'd rather test this logically than start replacing parts.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Capture voltage while the 2021 BMW X5 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

If it were in my driveway, two 2021 BMW X5s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Save the big job until that test fails. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. I'll update if anything new shows up.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Move a coil or plug on the 2021 BMW X5 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. On “car hesitates once, then drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Two 2021 BMW X5s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Nationwide. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

Update: the cheap test changed the symptom, so I'm not throwing parts yet. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 BMW X5, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2021 BMW X5 in Nationwide. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.
