Question: CPO luxury SUV or brand-new mainstream SUV?

TireDriverCommunity StarterApr 8, 20262023 Toyota 4Runner TRD ProPennsylvania
2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro, about 8,200 miles. Budget works for either a lightly used luxury SUV or a new mainstream model with a full warranty. I'm more worried about three-to-five-year ownership cost and service downtime than the purchase price. How would you compare them? I'm in Pennsylvania. If I fix it I'll come back and update the thread.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. Keep sale price, trade, and financing split on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner so a “good payment” cannot bury a worse deal. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. This is from a 2023 Toyota 4Runner in Pennsylvania with 8,200 miles. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I would not stare at the monthly. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2023 Toyota 4Runner and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. A written buyer’s order on the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” If they balk, that's your answer. On “cpo luxury suv or brand-new mainstream suv,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. If GAP is bundled I'm making them unbundle it.

The trap is a pretty payment hiding a worse car price. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2023 Toyota 4Runner and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. Not letting add-ons ride along because everyone does.

Update from me: I finally have sale price, fees, and trade on separate lines for the 2023 Toyota 4Runner. Sleeping on the number either way.

I'd slow the salesperson down here. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2023 Toyota 4Runner and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Then the comparison gets honest. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Calling insurance in the morning before I reply to the desk.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. I would not wire money until I've seen the 2023 Toyota 4Runner and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. That's the part that actually changes the decision. Parts cannon is a personality type I try to avoid. If the VIN lookup is clean I'm still doing PPI.
