Steering wheel shakes only under highway braking

2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4, about 96,000 miles. No vibration cruising, but braking from highway speed makes the steering wheel shake. Pads still have material. Is rotor thickness variation the usual culprit or should suspension bushings be checked first? Appreciate any ideas on what to check first. What am I missing?

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “steering wheel shakes only under highway braking,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 and see if the fault moves. Save the big job until that test fails. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Two 2023 GMC Sierra 1500s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. This is from a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 in Ohio with 96,000 miles. Stop there until you know. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Yes, with one caveat: Two 2023 GMC Sierra 1500s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “steering wheel shakes only under highway braking,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. If your situation is the opposite, ignore me.
