2017 Nissan Altima — surface rust underneath a winter daily

There is early surface rust on brackets, fasteners and seams underneath, but nothing structural. For a salt-belt car, what treatment slows it down without creating a hard coating that traps moisture? If I figure it out I will update the thread.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2017 Nissan Altima, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2017 Nissan Altima in Dallas. That's the whole play. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

It did surface rust underneath a winter daily twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Two 2017 Nissan Altimas can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

Log the conditions before you spend. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2017 Nissan Altima catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Save the big job until that test fails. On “surface rust underneath a winter daily,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Move a coil or plug on the 2017 Nissan Altima if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

If it were in my driveway, capture voltage while the 2017 Nissan Altima is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Heat soak after errands is the other window.
