2018 Kia Optima — short-trip driving and oil-change intervals

DieselWrenchCommunity StarterAug 2, 20262018 Kia Optima EXHouston
2018 Kia Optima EX, about 51,500 miles. The car gets lots of cold starts, idling and short trips with few long highway runs. The factory interval feels long for that use. How would you set an interval around duty cycle rather than just the odometer? If I figure it out I will update the thread.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2018 Kia Optima catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. When does it actually happen? Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2018 Kia Optima does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “short-trip driving and oil-change intervals,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in Houston with 51,500 miles. Do that first. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Move a coil or plug on the 2018 Kia Optima if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. That's the whole play. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Capture voltage while the 2018 Kia Optima is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in Houston with 51,500 miles. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. Checking again after work.

Quick add on that: If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Kia Optima, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Stop there until you know. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I'd push back a little: If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Kia Optima, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

I went back under the 2018 Kia Optima and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Log the conditions before you spend. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Kia Optima is losing coolant with no puddle. Save the big job until that test fails. On “short-trip driving and oil-change intervals,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Do that first. That's my plan before I call anyone.

On “short-trip driving and oil-change intervals,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Kia Optima and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. That's the whole play. Your commute and mine probably aren't the same, but the test still applies. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2018 Kia Optima first. Not driving it hard until I know more.
