2018 Kia Optima — when does GAP actually make sense?

TruckLearner956Community StarterJun 11, 20262018 Kia Optima EXNew York
2018 Kia Optima EX, about 87,000 miles. I am financing most of the purchase and depreciation could be steep early on. How do you decide whether GAP is worthwhile versus a larger down payment or buying coverage elsewhere?

Insurance and tax belong in the comparison, not as a surprise. Ask for out-the-door on the 2018 Kia Optima with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. Do that before you talk monthly again. On “when does gap actually make sense,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Fair point. Counterpoint: In New York, insurance quotes flipped a 2018 Kia Optima comparison for me more than the sale price did. That's the part that actually changes the decision. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

Walk if they won't put it on a buyer’s order. If one piece looks too good on the 2018 Kia Optima, hunt doc fees, accessories, and the APR next. Then the comparison gets honest. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in New York with 87,000 miles. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. If they only talk monthly I'm walking.

Same neighborhood, different next step: A written buyer’s order on the 2018 Kia Optima is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” If they balk, that's your answer. That's the whole play. Going to re-read the worksheet tonight.

Treat this like a math problem, not a vibe. Ask for out-the-door on the 2018 Kia Optima with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I'll post OTD once I have two apples-to-apples sheets.

Don't send a deposit on a phone quote. If they're pushing term length to shrink the payment, the 2018 Kia Optima price probably got worse. Then the comparison gets honest. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. Not wiring anything in the meantime.

Hard-won lesson from my last deal: Ask for out-the-door on the 2018 Kia Optima with fees, add-ons, and rate on separate lines. I'd rather lose the car than buy a foggy deal. On “when does gap actually make sense,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Get the messy numbers in writing first. A written buyer’s order on the 2018 Kia Optima is worth more than any verbal “we’ll make it work.” If they balk, that's your answer. On “when does gap actually make sense,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2018 Kia Optima in New York with 87,000 miles. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. If they get vague again I'm shopping the deal elsewhere.

If I were shopping this, i would not wire money until I've seen the 2018 Kia Optima and the title situation in person or via a trusted PPI. Screenshot the worksheet if you can. Stop there until you know. Doc fee is the line I'm watching.

If I were shopping this, in New York, insurance quotes flipped a 2018 Kia Optima comparison for me more than the sale price did. That's the part that actually changes the decision. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Doing the boring step first on purpose.
