2019 Audi S4 — delayed engagement into Drive when cold

RoadDriverCommunity StarterSep 4, 20262019 Audi S4 Premium PlusMiami
After sitting overnight, shifting from Park to Drive can take a second or two before the vehicle actually engages. Once warm it behaves normally. Would you start with fluid, adaptation data, mounts or something mechanical? Mostly looking for the right next step.

If it were in my driveway, two 2019 Audi S4s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. This is from a 2019 Audi S4 in Miami. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. I'd rather be boring and correct. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

OP update: scanned the 2019 Audi S4 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2019 Audi S4 and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2019 Audi S4, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2019 Audi S4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

That's a good start, but I wouldn't stop there. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2019 Audi S4 does it — then decide on parts. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Stop there until you know. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2019 Audi S4 and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

I went back under the 2019 Audi S4 and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2019 Audi S4, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “delayed engagement into drive when cold,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2019 Audi S4 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “delayed engagement into drive when cold,” that was the fork that mattered for me. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.

Agree — and I'd add this: Loaded-suspension checks on the 2019 Audi S4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. That's the branch I'd chase this week. This is from a 2019 Audi S4 in Miami. Log the conditions before you spend. Move a coil or plug on the 2019 Audi S4 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “delayed engagement into drive when cold,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. Heat soak after errands is the other window.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2019 Audi S4 didn't change. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2019 Audi S4, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. It did delayed engagement into drive when cold twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

If it were in my driveway, capture voltage while the 2019 Audi S4 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. That's the branch I'd chase this week. That's the whole play. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. Might be overthinking it, but I'd rather overthink than overspend.

If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. I'd rather look cautious in this thread than stuck later.

Ask what changed right before it started. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2019 Audi S4 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Do that first. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2019 Audi S4 first. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.
