2021 Tesla Model S — temperature climbs in traffic but drops once moving

TireWrench724Community StarterMay 27, 20262021 Tesla Model S Long RangeCentral Jersey
Coolant temperature rises while sitting with the A/C on, then drops once the car is moving. Coolant level looks correct. Fans run, but I do not know whether they are reaching full commanded speed.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 Tesla Model S is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2021 Tesla Model S in Central Jersey. Was this after sitting overnight? Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 Tesla Model S and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2021 Tesla Model S in Central Jersey. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Trying not to diagnose from the couch.

Ask what changed right before it started. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 Tesla Model S, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Make the next action something you can finish this week. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2021 Tesla Model S first. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

Ask what changed right before it started. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2021 Tesla Model S, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Any freeze-frame data saved? I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2021 Tesla Model S is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Take it or leave it — that's what I'd do. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

I hear you, though I'd still want a second check. Two 2021 Tesla Model Ss can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Log the conditions before you spend. Two 2021 Tesla Model Ss can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “temperature climbs in traffic but drops once,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2021 Tesla Model S and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Yes, with one caveat: Two 2021 Tesla Model Ss can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. On “temperature climbs in traffic but drops once,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Move a coil or plug on the 2021 Tesla Model S if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Save the big job until that test fails. I'd want that in writing, not as a promise. Not interested in a five-hour wait for a shrug.

Same neighborhood, different next step: Capture voltage while the 2021 Tesla Model S is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Stop there until you know. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Checked the easy stuff on the 2021 Tesla Model S and found one clue worth chasing before I book a shop. I already checked the easy fluid levels.

I went back under the 2021 Tesla Model S and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 Tesla Model S catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Verbal 'we'll take care of it' is not a plan. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Quick add on that: Loaded-suspension checks on the 2021 Tesla Model S catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. This is from a 2021 Tesla Model S in Central Jersey. A shop burned me once by skipping that step. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Agree — and I'd add this: Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 Tesla Model S, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Log the conditions before you spend. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2021 Tesla Model S does it — then decide on parts. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “temperature climbs in traffic but drops once,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Not gospel, but it saved me a headache. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2021 Tesla Model S, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Two 2021 Tesla Model Ss can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. I keep a notes app thread for this now.
