2023 GMC Sierra 1500 — catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally

TowWeekend964Community StarterAug 27, 20262023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4Atlanta
2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4, about 39,500 miles. A catalyst efficiency code came back after clearing once. The car drives normally and there are no misfire codes. Before condemning the catalytic converter, what sensor/data checks are worth doing? If I figure it out I will update the thread.

Log the conditions before you spend. A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is losing coolant with no puddle. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. When does it actually happen? I'll update if anything new shows up.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Capture voltage while the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. This is from a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 in Atlanta with 39,500 miles. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. I'll poke at it this weekend.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If you share a photo of the worksheet, easier to sanity-check. That's my plan before I call anyone.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Move a coil or plug on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

If it were in my driveway, move a coil or plug on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

Ask what changed right before it started. Move a coil or plug on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 if it's cylinder-specific and see whether the code follows. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. That's the whole play. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Two 2023 GMC Sierra 1500s can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “catalyst efficiency code but car drives normally,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. I'm keeping receipts and dates in one folder.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 and see if the fault moves. Save the big job until that test fails. Just my two cents from doing this recently. I'd sleep better after that step, even if it finds nothing. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

OP update: scanned the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Checking again after work.

Asking because it changes the advice: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Ask what changed right before it started. If a shop can't duplicate it on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. Save the big job until that test fails. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. That's my plan before I call anyone.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 does it — then decide on parts. Save the big job until that test fails. Just my two cents from doing this recently. Not driving it hard until I know more.
