Question: Apartment charging without a dedicated garage outlet

SmoothWrench26Community StarterJul 31, 20262023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 LimitedChicago
I can charge at work sometimes but not at home. For people living in apartments, what combination of public charging, workplace charging and occasional fast charging has actually been practical? Appreciate any ideas on what to check first.

I'd treat 12V warnings as a no-ignore. On the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5, I'd get the 12V/DC-DC side checked even if the traction pack looks fine. Then you'll know the next fork. On “apartment charging without a dedicated garage outlet,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Chicago. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Low-voltage gremlins will strand you even with a full pack. Try a second charger before blaming the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 — site sharing and pack temp change the curve a lot. That's where I'd start. If it repeats twice more I'll book time.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 didn't change. I'll poke at it this weekend.

I'd do that before spending real money. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Don't clear the alert just to make the screen pretty. Leave the alerts on the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 so service can see what you saw. I'd do that before spending real money. The universe charges extra for guessing. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. Not driving it hard until I know more.

Charge curves lie if you don't match starting SOC and temp. Match starting SOC and battery temp if you're comparing 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 charge sessions. Then you'll know the next fork. Any freeze-frame data saved? Make the next action something you can finish this week. Next check is the cheap one I can do in a driveway.

It did apartment charging without a dedicated garage outlet twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

Same neighborhood, different next step: On the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5, I'd get the 12V/DC-DC side checked even if the traction pack looks fine. I'd do that before spending real money. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. I'd rather pay for diagnosis than a second guess-repair.

Time, temperature, and whether it's in gear are the notes that actually help a shop. A day of patience here is cheaper than a wrong part. No warning lights, which is why I'm documenting it.
