1990 Ford F-150 XLT — need advice: Do shorter oil intervals actually make sense for my use?

1990 Ford F-150 XLT, about 8,200 miles. Most of my driving is short trips with a lot of idling, but the factory interval is pretty long. I'd rather not waste oil, but I also plan to keep the car past 150k. How would you set an interval based on use instead of just mileage? Appreciate any ideas on what to check first. What am I missing?

I'd keep this practical. Verify the cheap/easy branch on the 1990 Ford F-150 before a big repair or a big spend. That's where I'd start. If they can't show the line item, I assume it's hiding. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Yes, with one caveat: On the 1990 Ford F-150 in Los Angeles, I'd fix the thing you'll notice every day before chasing spec-sheet extras. I'd do that before spending real money. On “150 xlt — need advice: do shorter,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Write the result down so the next test isn't a repeat of the last one. That's my plan before I call anyone.

Asking because it changes the advice: If it still isn't clear on the 1990 Ford F-150, a specialist hour can be cheaper than another round of parts. That's where I'd start. Do that first. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Thanks — that narrowed it. I'm going to try the simpler check on the 1990 Ford F-150 first. If this is nothing, great. I want that in data.
