A/C is cold while driving, warm at stoplights

GarageGarage53Community StarterAug 26, 20262018 Ford Mustang GTOhio
A/C gets properly cold on the highway but becomes noticeably warmer at long lights. It cools down again almost immediately once the car is moving. Could this still be a refrigerant issue or does that point more toward airflow/fans? I'm in Ohio. Appreciate any ideas on what to check first.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Ford Mustang and see if the fault moves. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Run the total, not the monthly, before you commit. Parking it somewhere I can hear it better next time.

Yes, with one caveat: Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Ford Mustang and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. The universe charges extra for guessing. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

I went back under the 2018 Ford Mustang and it only happens after a heat soak, not on a cold start. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Loaded-suspension checks on the 2018 Ford Mustang catch play that a wheels-hanging inspection misses. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. This is from a 2018 Ford Mustang in Ohio. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

Intermittent stuff lies if you only catch it once. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2018 Ford Mustang, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

Log the conditions before you spend. Two 2018 Ford Mustangs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. Climate here is different, so treat that as a local data point. Wrote this up on my lunch break.

I wouldn't throw parts yet. Get a real battery/charging test on the 2018 Ford Mustang, not just resting voltage, before blaming a module. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. Worth doing even if the car feels fine right now. I'll update if anything new shows up.

OP update: scanned the 2018 Ford Mustang again and still only have the one pending code, no new lights. Doing the boring step first on purpose.

This is usually cheaper to test than to guess. Swap the cheap/easy piece first on the 2018 Ford Mustang and see if the fault moves. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Start with the test that can prove you wrong. Two 2018 Ford Mustangs can feel identical and have different causes, so measure before you copy someone else's repair. That's the branch I'd chase this week. Learned this the expensive way on a previous car. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

Fair point. Counterpoint: Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2018 Ford Mustang does it — then decide on parts. Don't erase codes until someone who can help has seen them. Keep sale price, fees, and rate as three different conversations. That's coming from doing this as an owner, not a shop. If that fails I'll eat the diagnostic fee.

Agree — and I'd add this: A pressure test beats staring at a dry driveway if the 2018 Ford Mustang is losing coolant with no puddle. You'll know quickly if you're on the wrong tree. Happy to compare notes if your setup is different. This is me being the wet blanket on purpose.

On “a/c is cold while driving, warm at,” that was the fork that mattered for me. Had a similar mess a couple years ago and that's what finally sorted it. This is the filter I use when the thread starts repeating itself. That's my plan before I call anyone.

It did a/c is cold while driving, warm at twice this week, both times after sitting. No change in mileage feel. Video is ugly but it shows the hesitation.

If it were in my driveway, if a shop can't duplicate it on the 2018 Ford Mustang, bring a video plus freeze-frame data, not just a story. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. This is from a 2018 Ford Mustang in Ohio. Post the numbers (or the code) and people can get more specific. Cold start is when I can actually reproduce it.

Do that first. I've seen both outcomes, which is why I'd test instead of assume. Happens in gear, not in park, for what that's worth.

Ask what changed right before it started. Capture voltage while the 2018 Ford Mustang is actually failing — after it restarts you've lost the clue. Save the big job until that test fails. Stop there until you know. I'm in no rush to be a hero on it.

Tried a second charger / second scan and the story on the 2018 Ford Mustang didn't change. This is the version I'd tell a friend.

Cleared nothing. I want service to see the alert on the 2018 Ford Mustang first. If the story changes I'll post the new data.

I'd want a measurement, not a hunch. Write temp, speed, and in-gear vs coast when the 2018 Ford Mustang does it — then decide on parts. If the cheap test changes it, stop and reassess. Stop there until you know. Not trying to scare you — just skip the expensive first guess. I'll poke at it this weekend.
