Fun daily that still works for one-car ownership

1990 Ford F-150 XLT, about 22,000 miles. I want something I enjoy on back roads but still need to commute, carry luggage and survive bad weather. Trying to avoid buying a car that only makes sense on paper. What compromises have actually mattered after a year? I'd rather test this logically than start replacing parts.

Don't get cute with the meetup or the payment. Meet at a bank or dealer title office for the 1990 Ford F-150, not a parking lot at night. Then you'll know the next fork. If it doesn't change the out-the-door or the repair estimate, it's noise. Make the next action something you can finish this week. If the title is messy I'm out, full stop.
